Case summary

A lecturer at the Russian Islamic University, member of the Ulema Council, former imam-khatib of the Al-Iman parish of the muhtasibat of the Sovetsky and Privolzhsky districts of Kazan. Detained and taken into custody in March 2020 on charges of organising the activities of an extremist organisation: according to the investigation, he was the leader of a cell of the "Nurdjular" movement, as Russian investigative authorities call the disparate groups of followers of the Turkish theologian Said Nursi. On 2 November 2021, he was sentenced to six and a half years in a general regime colony. Presumably, he was released in October 2025.
