Case summary

Popov was searched and questioned about his participation in the activities of the banned National Bolshevik Party. In October 2012, he was sentenced to a 150 thousand rubles fine on charges of incitement to hatred or enmity and participation in the activities of an extremist organisation, as well as calls for extremist activities (this charge was later dropped); due to the expiry of the statute of limitation, Popov was released from punishment. The court of second instance repeatedly sent the case back for a new hearing, but in July 2014 upheld the sentence; the European Court of Human Rights accepted Popov's complaint for consideration.
