Case summary

Sergey Ryzhov is an opposition activist from Saratov, a member of the Party of Free People, supported Vyacheslav Maltsev, but did not consider himself a member of the Artpodgotovka movement. He was detained in Engels on 1 November 2017 together with several other activists in the flat belonging to an acquaintance. During the search a TNT block and five bottles with incendiary mixture were seized. According to Ryzhov himself, these items were not present on the premises before the arrival of law enforcement officers. According to the regional FSS, Ryzhov planned to use these items to seize the regional government building, Teatralnaya Square and the post office. On 3 November, the court decided to place Ryzhov in custody. At the end of November Ryzhov was transferred to Moscow, to the Lefortovo pre-trial detention centre. During his stay in the pre-trial detention centre the investigator did not allow him a single visit.

On 19 October 2021, he was sentenced to six years in a strict regime penal colony. On 31 October 2023, he was released.
