Case summary

A case has been opened for organising the activities of an extremist organisation in connection with the study of the works of the Turkish theologian Said Nursi. Russian law enforcers unjustifiably prosecute such people as members of extremist movement "Nurdjular", the existence of which has not been proven. On 29 July 2019, Vakhitov was sentenced to seven years in a general regime colony. Presumably, he was released no later than 2024.

OVD-Info has been designated an «extremist» organisation in Russia — by decision of the Russian authorities, like other independent human rights and media projects.
