Case summary

Participated in military operations in Ukraine. In a conversation with Novaya Gazeta, he said that he realised that he did not want to kill people. After taking leave, he went to Buryatia to visit the grave of his fallen comrade in arms, where he converted to Buddhism. In August, after leaving, he wrote a report about his refusal to participate in military operations. However, due to the beginning of mobilisation, the process of dismissal was stopped. On 28 September 2022, after the Criminal Code included a part of the article on the non-execution of an order in wartime, Vasilets wrote a new report, which became the reason for a criminal case. On 7 April 2023, he was sentenced to two years and five months in a penal colony. On 1 June, the court of appeal reduced the term by three months. Vasilets was released on 27 September 2024 on parole.
