Case summary
He was detained on April 24th, 2018, and subsequently arrested on charges of organising activities of a terrorist organisation in connection with alleged involvement in the Islamist party Hizb-ut-Tahrir, unrelated to terrorism. Also charged with recruitment to a terrorist organisation.
On December 17th, 2019, Zafar was sentenced to 17 years in strict regime penal colony. In the summer of 2021, while in colony, he went on a hunger strike due to biased and cruel treatment by the Federal Penitentiary Service officers: he was placed in a punitive isolation cell because of going to a shop located on the territory of the colony. On August 5th Zafar stopped his hunger strike.
