Case summary
Marat Bazarbayev is an alleged member of "Hizb ut-Tahrir", an organization banned and recognised as extremist in Russia. On October 6, 2011, after the initiation of a case of participation in the activities of a religious organisation, in respect of which a court issued a decision that entered into legal force on the prohibition of activities in connection with extremist activities, materials of the organisation, including those mentioned in the Federal List of Extremist Materials, were seized from his home during a search. Then Bazarbayev, as well as the other defendants in the case, was charged with preparation for actions aimed at violent seizure of power and violent overthrow of the constitutional order (after which he was taken into custody on July 31, 2012), as well as inducement and involvement of others in activities aimed at seizure of power and change of the order. On November 21, 2013, he was sentenced to six years' imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony. On February 2, 2015, the court of appeal reduced the sentence to five years. On July 28, 2017, Bazarbayev was released.
Bazarbayev was detained in July 2021 and taken into custody. Charged with participation in the activities of a terrorist organization and with encouraging others to take part in such activities. On March 5, 2024, Bazarbaev was sentenced to 14 years in a strict-regime penal colony.
