Case summary
A colonel in the Directorate of the Service of Troops and Military Service Safety of the Ministry of Defence. In January 2025, he was charged with abuse of official powers in connection with drafting, together with a colleague, technical specifications for the supply of 760 “Strazh” weapons storage security systems. The specifications did not include a requirement for specialised GSM modules meeting the Ministry of Defence’s standards. We do not consider this prosecution to be politically motivated. In addition, Zakharenko was accused of financing extremist activities because of a donation to the Anti-Corruption Foundation. The colonel claims that he wanted to make sure that he had no subscriptions and sent the money accidentally. He is under house arrest.
