Tatarstan's election commission has filed an administrative lawsuit with the republic's Supreme Court seeking to cancel the registration of Airat Gumerbaev, the Yabloko party candidate for the State Duma, according to the party's regional press service. Gumerbaev is running in the single-mandate district No. 34 in Naberezhnye Chelny.
The lawsuit cites Gumerbaev's ownership of securities in foreign companies as the reason. The party says the candidate notified the election commission about these assets in advance but cannot sell or transfer them due to restrictions in the depositary infrastructure linked to sanctions. The regional Yabloko branch added that evidence of the impossibility of selling the shares was submitted to and accepted by the district election commission.
The Supreme Court of Tatarstan is scheduled to consider the lawsuit on August 31. The party is calling on supporters to attend the hearing.
Earlier, Russia's Supreme Court, acting on a lawsuit from the Rodina party, canceled the registration of Yabloko's federal list for the State Duma election. Party members retained the right to run in single-mandate districts. In August, courts also granted lawsuits to remove Yabloko's regional lists from elections in the Sverdlovsk, Kaliningrad, and Pskov regions, Karelia, and St. Petersburg. The party was typically accused of foreign funding, copyright violations in campaign materials, and displaying extremist symbols.
