The meeting between Gallagher and Ushakov took place, the Secretariat of State of the Holy See said in a post on X, without disclosing details of the conversation or its duration.
The talks were originally scheduled for August 26 but were postponed by a day. No reason for the delay was given.
Earlier in his three-day visit, Gallagher held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. After that meeting, he recalled Pope Leo XIV's call to end Russia's war in Ukraine, saying the Holy See is ready to support any effort toward peace.
Gallagher also visited the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and met with Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk.
