Case summary

Ukrainian military personnel. Served in the separate special-purpose unit "Azov" of the National Guard of Ukraine. Supposedly surrendered to the Russian military in Mariupol in May 2022 during the siege of "Azovstal". A case was opened against him for participation in a terrorist organisation and for undergoing training to carry out terrorist actions. On 22 July 2024, Chernenko was sentenced to 18 years in a strict-regime penal colony. He was handed over to Ukraine as part of a prisoner-of-war exchange, apparently in July 2025.
