According to the investigation, in 2020, he signed a contract with 'Azov' and received training at a Ukrainian Armed Forces training center. Using the skills acquired there, 'he participated in combat operations as part of an illegal armed group in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) until May 2022'. His 'criminal activity was halted by Russian Armed Forces personnel.'

Full summary
Ukrainian military personnel. Served in the separate special-purpose unit "Azov" of the National Guard of Ukraine. Supposedly surrendered to the Russian military in Mariupol in May 2022 during the siege of "Azovstal". A case was opened against him for participation in a terrorist organisation and for undergoing training to carry out terrorist actions. On 22 July 2024, Chernenko was sentenced to 18 years in a strict-regime penal colony. He was handed over to Ukraine as part of a prisoner-of-war exchange, apparently in July 2025.
