Case summary

He is a resident of the Genichesky district of the Kherson region of Ukraine. He was detained on 7 February 2024 on charges of participation in an illegal armed formation; the next day the court in Crimea ordered that he be taken into custody. According to his wife, he suffered an epileptic seizure while in court: when he was detained, she informed the authorities about his disability and was promised in response that her husband would be released after a conversation. The family did not have the original disability certificate at that moment – the wife had turned it in, because, in her own words, she was arranging care for him. According to the investigation, Derman participated in the activities of the Noman Chelebidzhikhan Battalion. Human rights activists believe that by the time Derman joined the battalion according to the investigation, the formation was no longer functioning. According to his wife, Derman had regular seizures in court and could not fully participate in the trial. In October 2024, he was sentenced to 3.5 years in a strict regime penal colony.

In June 2025, Derman was informed that he had been stripped of his Russian citizenship, which he had obtained in 2023 as part of forced passportisation.
