According to the investigation, in August 2021 he voluntarily joined the "Azov" regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine, underwent training on the territory of the village of Yurievka, Mangushsky district, including acquiring knowledge, practical abilities and skills during the classes on physical and psychological training, handling weapons, explosive devices, explosives and objects that pose a danger to others, first aid for the subsequent application of these skills in combat operations against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. After that, as a gunner of a howitzer-artillery unit, he took part in combat operations against the civilian population of the Donetsk people's republic (DPR) and soldiers of the Russian Federation.

Full summary
Ukrainian serviceman. In the spring of 2022, he was captured in Mariupol. On 18 March 2024, a court in the occupied part of the Donetsk region of Ukraine sentenced him to 26 or 27 years in a strict regime colony on charges of attempted murder, conducting prohibited methods of warfare and damage to property: according to the investigation, he and other Ukrainian servicemen shelled residential houses and civilian infrastructure on the outskirts of Mariupol. In addition, a case was opened against him for participation in the activities of a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities due to his involvement in the activities of the Azov battalion. On 28 August 2025, on this case Filin was sentenced to 28 years in a strict regime colony, taking into account his previous sentence.
