Case summary

Resident of Gelendzhik, human rights defender. On 20 February 2012, he was detained on charges of fraud, then the charge was reclassified to extortion. According to the prosecution, he extorted money from developers who were building an apartment block with violations. During detention he was beaten and tortured. A pretrial restriction in the form of detention was chosen. Later Ivanov was charged with another extortion from a property developer, allegedly in April-May 2011. On 30 April 2013, he was sentenced to 13 years in a strict regime colony. On 13 August 2013, the court of second instance left the sentence unchanged. Ivanov was allegedly released on 19 February 2025.
