Case summary

On 26 February 2014 she was detained by FSB officers. At the investigation she signed a confession because she was misled about the legal terminology. In a pre-trial detention centre in Krasnodar, one of the FSB officers hit her in the face and said: "Come on, remember what you know – you don't know!" The investigation prevented Annik Kesian from meeting with her relatives in every possible way, leaving her in complete isolation from the outside world, which prevented her from finding and choosing a qualified defence lawyer and having the case covered in the media. She was charged with treason. On 26 February 2014, she was sentenced to eight years in a penal colony. In March 2017, she was escorted from the colony to Moscow for a review of the case. She was pardoned on 29 July 2017 and released on 8 August.
