Case summary

Activist and blogger. Repeatedly faced pressure from the authorities. In 2018, he was detained because of a picket demanding resignation of the head of the Tbilisi district of Krasnodar Krai Evgeny Ilyin. He was fined 12,000 rubles (130 US$) following a picket with a poster "Thank you" Putin for raising the retirement age and VAT!", and also was issued three administrative protocols because of a series of solitary pickets "Thank you Putin".

The case was initiated in 2020. During the debates, the prosecutor asked to sentence him to 6 years in prison, on 23 November Klimenchenko was sentenced to 4 years and 1 month in prison. On 3 March 2021, the appeal left the sentence unchanged, and on 17 March 2021 Valery was added to the terrorist and extremist register of Rosfinmonitoring. Presumably, Klimenchenko was released in September 2023.
