Case summary

Resident of Mariupol (Ukraine). In May 2018, he got a job in the Azov battalion as a mechanic, repairing vehicles. According to his own words, he did not participate in combat missions. On 22 February 2022, two days before the invasion of the Russian Federation, together with the rest of the employees of the auto repair base was sent to the plant "Azovstal". At the same time, he, like the others, was issued weapons. Maksimov was there until 16 May, when the company commander announced that they were surrendering. According to him, they had no weapons on them when they surrendered. Maksimov was accused of participating in the activities of a terrorist organisation and receiving training to carry out terrorist activities. On 21 October 2024, he was sentenced to 18 years in a strict regime colony. On 4 July 2025, Maksimov was handed over to Ukraine as part of a prisoner-of-war exchange.
