Case summary
On 16 March 2012 she was detained on suspicion of participation in the action of the punk group Pussy Riot in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. She was sent to a pre-trial detention centre. During the investigation, she went on hunger strike when her period of detention was extended. She was found guilty of hooliganism and sentenced to two years' imprisonment in a general regime colony. The court of appeal replaced the real term with a suspended sentence. During the appeal, Samutsevich's defence insisted that the defendant didn't have a chance to take part in the action, as the guard took her out of the cathedral as soon as she uncovered her guitar.
