Case summary
On October 20, 2021, Tolokonnikov’s home was searched; he was detained and interrogated. On October 22, the court ruled to place him in custody, charging him with involvement in the activities of an extremist organization due to his connection with the Jehovah’s Witnesses community. Members of this community are prosecuted under extremist articles solely for religious activities: holding meetings and worship services, recruiting new supporters.
Later, it became known that Tolokonnikov was also accused of organizing the activities of an extremist organization. On July 12, 2023, he was sentenced to five years in a general-regime penal colony.
On June 27, 2025, he was released from the penal colony after serving his sentence.
