Case summary

Resident of the Tver region. Calls himself an unemployed dachnik. In his own words, he participated in the development of spacecraft, worked as a machinist, and was an editor of the criminal section of the NTV website. Repeatedly published in "Russian Journal" and on "Kasparov.Ru". Since the last years of Soviet rule, he has taken part in protests in Moscow. Detained on 7 May 2022 in a settlement near the town Konakovo. On 8 May it became known that he was in pre-trial detention centre No. 1 in Tver. A criminal case was opened against him for calling for extremist activity, spreading deliberately false information about the Russian Armed Forces, and preparing for participation in an illegal armed formation. From 13 September to 18 October 2022, Trofimov was on a prison hunger strike demanding "the immediate cessation of military actions by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine and the immediate withdrawal of all troops and other forces of the Russian Federation beyond the internationally recognised borders of Ukraine". On 28 July 2023, Trofimov was fined 40,000 rubles under the administrative article on discrediting the Armed Forces (Article 20.3.3 of the Code of Administrative Offences) for showing sheets of paper with the inscriptions "NO WAR" and "PUTIN IS A DICK" from the "fishbowl" at the court room, and planned to show the audience posters with the inscriptions "GLORY TO UKRAINE" and "FREE NAVALNY". On 17 September, Trofimov began a hunger strike, demanding for incoming and outgoing correspondence to be censored precisely in accordance with the Internal Regulations, and for all letters from early July, that had been delayed by the censor for reasons not specified in the Regulations, to be delivered. On 17 October 2023, Trofimov was sentenced to 10 years in a strict regime penal colony. In June 2024, a new case was brought against him on public justification of terrorism because of the conversations in the pre-trial detention centre and his last word in court in the first case. Later it became known that this case also includes an article on discrediting Russian Armed Forces. On 6 May 2025, Trofimov was sentenced, taking into account the previous sentence, to 13 years in a strict regime penal colony.
