Case summary

Born in Ukraine, he was a second-year student at the Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the time of his arrest.

Verdiyan was detained on 28th of October, 2022 for "petty hooliganism". He found himself in a detention centre having just flown to Moscow from Astrakhan, where he lives. The student was going to fly to Istanbul the same day, but he was detained at a bus stop near the Vnukovo airport and arrested for 10 days, allegedly for "using foul language".

On 7th of November, Verdiyan was supposed to be released from the detention centre, but on the same day he was charged with a criminal case of state treason, and the Lefortovo court sent him to a pre-trial detention centre.

On 7th of September, 2023, Verdiyan was sentenced to six years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony.
