He was a witness in the case of five alleged members of Hizb ut-Tahrir (Salavat Khabirov, Alfred Shaimov, whose group, according to the investigation, Zagitdinov belonged to, and others) being considered in Chelyabinsk, and was prosecuted on charges of participation in the activities of a terrorist organisation; on 3 August 2016, he was sentenced to eight years in a general regime colony. He was released from prison in September 2023.
