Case summary
Eldar Garipov studied at Tver State University, Department of Geography and Geoecology, specialising in rural development. After graduation, he failed to find a job in his speciality and found a job in St. Petersburg as a GIS specialist.
Garipov participated in the action on 31 January. The detention was very brutal - several law enforcers piled on the young man, he was beaten on the head and lacerated.
Immediately after the detention Garipov was hospitalised. The staff of the medical centre, where he received first aid, reported his injuries to the police. After that, a neighbourhood policeman came to Garipov's home and promised to pass the materials about the beating at the rally to the Investigative Committee. However, after this conversation, the case was initiated against the rally participant himself.
Garipov insists that he did not use violence against the authorities and believes that he is being stigmatised in order to avoid prosecution for abuse of power.
Garipov was taken into custody. On 18 February 2022, he was sentenced to one and a half years in a penal colony and released in the courtroom.
