On 26 January 2024, he was taken into custody on the grounds of participation in mass riots, initiated because of the public gathering on 17 January in Baymak in support of activist Fail Alsynov, sentenced to four years in prison. On 23 December 2025, Akhmetov was sentenced to four and a half years in a general regime colony.
