Case summary

Resident of Kazan. In 2005, he was sentenced to four years and seven months in prison for involvement with Hizb ut-Tahrir on charges of promoting terrorism and participation in the activities of an extremist organisation. Afterwards, the charge of promoting terrorism was removed from the sentence and the term was reduced to one year.

On 14 March 2017, he was detained after a search and subsequently arrested on charges of involvement in a terrorist organisation, once again for alleged involvement in Hizb ut-Tahrir, which has no connection to terrorism.

On 25 December a charge of incitement to hatred was added, and on 8 January 2018 a charge of calling for terrorist activity was added.

On 5 February 2020, he was sentenced to 19 years in a strict regime penal colony.

In 2023, it became known that a new criminal case was opened against Gataullin: public justification of terrorism and incitement to terrorist activity. On 15 May 2024, a verdict was reached, details are unknown.
