Case summary

A criminal case was opened against Ilmir Imaev and other members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Kazan in connection with a number of actions using symbols of the banned movement, including pickets and car rallies, which were dedicated to the ban on translation of the Koran and persecution of Muslims; In addition, Imaev was charged with knowingly making a false denunciation, apparently on the basis of an open appeal to the head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov about the persecution of Muslims; on 13 January 2014, a search took place, Imaev was detained, but then released on his own recognizance; on 9 April, he was placed in pre-trial detention; on 18 December 2014, he was sentenced to three and a half years in a penal colony; on 3 July 2015, the court of appeal reduced the term by a month. Transferred to a general regime colony, then to a tuberculosis dispensary. Released on 21 July 2017
