According to the investigation, while in Mariupol, he voluntarily joined the ranks of the Ukrainian nationalist paramilitary formation Azov Brigade, which has been designated in Russia as a terrorist community. He subsequently took part in combat operations “against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the territory of the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics”, serving as a chemist in the brigade’s radiation, chemical and biological defence platoon.
