Case summary

He was detained during the dispersal of a rally on 27 July 2019 in Moscow. On 29 July, he was taken into custody by court decision on charges of using violence against a Rosgvardiya soldier. Later it became known that Kovalenko was also charged with participation in mass riots. Another episode about the use of violence against a member of the Rosgvardiya also appeared.

On 4 September, Kovalenko was sentenced to 3.5 years in a general regime colony on charges of using violence against Rosgvardiya soldiers.

On 3 October, the appeal court decided to return the case back to the court of first instance for consideration of the lawyer's comments on the trial transcript. On 17 October, the decision of the court of first instance was left unchanged. On 4 February 2021, the court of cassation instance reduced the term by three months.

On 16 June, the court replaced the rest of Kovalenko's sentence with correctional work, and on 30 June Kovalenko was released.
