According to the court's information, during the trial it was established that in July 2016, Linnik, after completing military conscription service after mobilisation in the "Aidar" assault battalion, joined the terrorist community and began serving as a senior turner. He was provided with firearms and ammunition and was engaged in the repair and maintenance of military equipment used by the terrorist community on the territory of the "Donetsk People's Republic". In December 2016, the leadership of the Aidar battalion unilaterally cancelled the contract with Linnik due to his violation of the terms of military service.

In 2016, he served as a turner in the former Ukrainian Aidar battalion, re-formed into the 24th separate assault battalion as part of the 10th separate mountain assault brigade of the AFU.
