According to the investigation, in February 2022, in Mariupol, he voluntarily joined the Ukrainian paramilitary nationalist unit the Azov Battalion, which is designated as a terrorist organisation in Russia. Later, he participated in combat operations "against the Russian Armed Forces in the territory of the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics," serving as a rifleman in the battalion.
