Case summary

He lived in Sakhalin and was a member of a strikeball club. In April 2020, he was detained and taken into custody on charges of participation in the activities of a terrorist community. During the search, a certain tube with wires was seized from him. The same tubes were found during the search of the other people prosecuted in the case, Alexander Kozin and Arseniy Lesnoy, but law enforcers were handling them carelessly and an explosion technician saying it was a safe device. Safonov apparently pleaded guilty and gave the necessary testimony. His case was tried separately from that of Kozin and Lesnoy. On 23 November 2021, he was sentenced to two and a half years in a general regime penal colony. Presumably, Safonov was released in October 2022.
