According to the investigation, in July 2022, he "submitted an application to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine," "planned to illegally cross the state border of the Russian Federation in order to defect to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and participate in military actions against Russia as part of the Ukrainian armed formation, the 'Freedom of Russia' Legion." Following instructions from representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he distributed leaflets in his native Rostov, "affixed stickers and made inscriptions on various objects with the aim of persuading people to join the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine." He travelled to Belgorod with the intention of crossing the border there. As reported by media citing the FSB, "attempts to bypass the established border crossing points and numerous checkpoints were unsuccessful – residents of border settlements noticed the suspicious stranger. It became dangerous to spend the nights in forest belts, and the man moved to the territory of the railway station. For concealment purposes, he purchased tickets to different destinations daily."
