On 17 February 2021, he was detained and taken into custody on the same day on charges of participation in the activities of a terrorist organisation due to involvement in the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir. On 9 September 2022, Shikhametov was sentenced to 11 years in a strict regime penal colony.
