Case summary

A political scientist and educator, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and World Politics of the Higher School of Economics. From 1993 to 2006 he worked in Belarus. He criticised the local authorities. In March 2006 he was deprived of his residence permit and deported to Russia. In April 2024 it became known that a case of slander against President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko was brought against him. One of the two episodes of the case was slander, coupled with accusation of a person of committing a crime against sexual inviolability and sexual freedom of a person or a grave or especially grave crime. On 23 January 2025, the court returned the case to the prosecutor's office. On 27 November 2025, following a new examination of the case, the court sentenced Suzdaltsev to 400 hours of community work.
