Case summary

In May 2012, it became known that a criminal case was opened against Svatov in the village of Kosh-Agach in the Altai Republic on suspicion of organising a cell of the banned organisation Tablighi Jamaat; literature was seized; on 18 June 2013, the case went to court; Svatov was forced to give up his position as imam of the local mosque; on 6 March 2014, he was sentenced to a fine of 100 thousand roubles (1,123 USD) and a ban on religious activity for two years; on 23 April, the court of second instance lifted the ban on religious activity.
