Albina Valiakhmetova

A resident of Kazan. Her husband Amir Khakimullin was sentenced in 2016 to 17 years in a strict regime colony on charges of involvement in a terrorist organisation, namely the Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir. On 17 September 2024, Valiakhmetova was detained on the same charge and taken into custody the next day.

The Hizb ut-Tahrir party was recognised as a terrorist party and banned in the Russian Federation in 2003. Human rights activists considered this ban to be groundless, as there was no evidence that members of this party were involved in terrorist activities. Twenty years later, the party actively expressed support for terrorist activities against Israel. Nevertheless, in Russia people are persecuted not even for their statements, much less for involvement in terrorist acts, but solely on the basis of alleged membership, which, as a rule, is reduced to meetings in flats and the study of literature.
