Case summary
On February 14, 2019, a criminal case was opened against Vorobyov on high treason, preparation for the export of materials for the creation of delivery vehicles for weapons of mass destruction, and attempted smuggling of equipment for the creation of military equipment. The scientist was taken into custody. On April 23, 2021, Vorobyov was sentenced to 20 years in strict regime prison and a fine of one million roubles.
Vorobyov's lawyer reported that while in custody, the man "was diagnosed with fibrotic lesions of the lungs and a tumour on his arm, but the necessary tests to diagnose and assess the benignity or malignancy of the tumour were not done".
