Case summary

On 2 May 2019, law enforcement agencies detained Mustafa on a charge of using violence against a government official, dangerous to life and health. A court placed him into custody. Later, officers reclassified the charge to non-dangerous violence, softening the accusation.

In December, he began a hunger strike against the conditions of detention in the pre-trial detention center in Pyatigorsk and the demand to shave off his beard.

On 27 December, a court sentenced him to a year and five months in a penal colony. On 21 February 2020, a court of appeal reduced the sentence by a month. On 25 February, he was released. A prosecutor's office appealed the courts' decisions in first and appellate instances. In June, a court of cassation instance canceled them and sent the case for review. On 18 August, a court sentenced Vyshegurov to a year and a month of general regime colony, which he had already managed to serve.
