Case summary

Resident of Crimea. Brother of Enver Krosh, also arrested and charged in a case for alleged involvement in the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which has no connection to terrorism.

On 24 January 2023, officials of the Federal Security Service (FSB) conducted searches of Crimean Tatars in different villages of the Dzhankoi district of Crimea. As a result, 6 people, including Ekrem Krosh, were detained and sent to Simferopol. The next day, the court sent all six to pre-trial detention on charges of participation in the activities of a terrorist organization and preparation for violent seizure of power due to involvement in the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which has not been involved in any violent activities.

Krosh later said that upon admission to the pre-trial detention centre, he and other prisoners were made to squat for two hours and forced to raise their hands above their heads with their fingers up. Those who put their hands down were beaten, including on the head and with a stun gun. The stun gun was often used by the pre-trial detention centre staff in the future when prisoners objected and tried to defend their rights. Krosh also said that every evening during the inspection he was forced to recite the Russian anthem by heart. After one of his refusals, he was taken to a holding room where he was threatened and then beaten. "I was beaten on my legs below the pelvis, but I resisted. Then they hit me with a stun gun just below my armpit, in a soft spot - I was thrown back. They lifted me up and started beating me on the inner part of my legs, on my head," the prisoner told the court. After Krosh wrote a complaint against the officers who beat him to the head of the pre-trial detention centre Nikolai Riabov, the latter summoned him to his office, where he hit him in the ear and the eye, leaving a bruise.

On 22 August 2023, the case was brought to the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don.

On 29 April 2025, Krosh was sentenced to 14 years in a strict regime colony.
