Case summary
Moscow resident. In the night leading to November 27, 2013, a search was conducted in Makhmudov's apartment without witnesses, under a warrant related to an attempted theft of two sweaters from a store (the case was closed in 2016 due to the statute of limitations). During the search, cartridges were found in the father-in-law's nightstand, but it was Makhmudov who was detained, while the father-in-law was not even questioned. The investigation declared Makhmudov the creator and leader of the terrorist cell that planned an attack on the "Kirgizia" cinema in Moscow. Human rights activists believe that there is no convincing evidence of his involvement in the crime; in their opinion, the prosecution was part of a campaign to pressure Muslims.
22 April 2016 sentenced to 13 years in a strict regime penal colony.
