Case summary
On March 14, 2017, he was detained after a search and then arrested on charges of organising activities of a terrorist organisation. The reason was alleged involvement in the Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir: supporters of this party in the Russian Federation are prosecuted on terrorist charges because of exclusively religious and party activities - meetings, discussing literature, and engaging new supporters. On March 13, 2019, he was sentenced to 22 years in high security prison.
In April 2020, upon arrival to the prison, he was immediately sent to a punishment cell.
In August 2024, it became known that Sungatov was transferred from to a higher security facility. The reason was, as relayed by a person who corresponded with him, numerous "far-fetched penalties".
