Case summary
On 21 February 2012, members of the feminist group Pussy Riot performed a so-called "punk prayer" on the pulpit of Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow. The "prayer" lasted less than a minute and had no musical accompaniment, and the band members were escorted out of the church by security guards. On the same day, a video clip of Pussy Riot's song with the refrain "Mother of God, chase Putin away" with fragments of the incident in the church appeared on the Internet. A case of hate-motivated hooliganism was opened. Tolokonnikova was arrested in March 2012 and sentenced to two years in a general regime colony in August 2012. On 23 December 2013, she was amnestied and released.
In March 2023, it became known that a case of insulting the feelings of believers was brought against Tolokonnikova.
