Case summary

A resident of Nizhny Tagil, Afanasenko was accused of organising the activities of an extremist organisation. Investigators alleged that, as a supporter of the "Citizens of the USSR" movement, he had declared himself the "Acting Head of Nizhny Tagil". This movement rejects the dissolution of the Soviet Union, although its structure and the extent of the threat it poses to Russian society remain unclear. Afanasenko had been released on his own recognisance during the investigation. On 14 August 2024, he was sentenced to six years in a general regime penal colony.
