Задержан в сентябре 2021 года в Москве и взят под стражу по обвинению в вовлечении в организацию массовых беспорядков в связи с перепиской в телеграм-канале "Что-Делать!", где обсуждались возможные протестные действия во время выборов в Думу. Следствие считает его инициатором преступной деятельности. Позже стало известно, что Чебанова обвинили также в возбуждении ненависти. 5 апреля 2024 года его приговорили к семи с половиной годам колонии общего режима.
